Kalon's road to recovery
"It really sets my drive. I know how important this is to me, to be able to come back," Davis said after Tuesday's bowl practice. "Just to go back at it again—I get another chance, because everybody in my position doesn't get another chance, so I'm just trying to make the best of it."
He currently tips the scales somewhere between 340 and 345 pounds. At the earliest, he'll be fully cleared for mat drills when the team returns from break.
"I just want to make sure that I come in shape, because I haven't really done anything over the last few months, prior to this week," Davis said. "I'm just trying to make sure I come in shape where I can hit the mat drills and everything full speed, hang in with everybody."
His current weight lifting regiment is designed so that no pressure is applied to his back.
No squats. No cleans.
Rehab is still part of the routine, too.
"It's just a regiment for me, because I know it's helping me out to make sure that I'm strong enough to come back and still be able to compete," Davis said. "I don't want to take the chance of it coming back, being down at the bottom and being sloppy. I just want to jump in and compete."
There's no cutting any corners. Another surgery would bring an end to his playing days.
"We've got to make sure that it doesn't come back. I believe that could possibly be my chance of making sure I play the rest of my career," Davis said.
The injury first crept up during his junior year of high school.
Davis was helping his sister move during the spring of his junior year.
"We were in spring ball for high school, too. They sat me out for a while," he said. "For a couple of months, it would flare up one day and I would be good the next day."
It's possible that he'll be ready for full contact during spring practice.
Ideally, Davis will be working his way up the depth chart by then.
"It'll be my first year. I'm just trying to come out and compete, get into the game at some point," he said.
After the surgery, his first goal in rehab was to regain enough strength to run in water. Now he's allowed to run normally.
"It's getting better every day. I just started this week, running and doing a little bit of weight lifting. It's good to get out with the team and run every once in a while," Davis said.
