Tigers unscathed in Chucktown

Clemson narrowly escaped from Carolina First Arena with a 66-59 win over College of Charleston on Wednesday night.

The win extends Clemson’s winning streak to three games and improves the Tigers’ record to 8-4.

“We needed this after close losses on the road at South Carolina and Florida State," said Clemson head coach Brad Brownell. "We needed to find ways to win a close, competitive game. The guys needed to find success this way."

Demontez Stitt, who sat out the last two games after recovering from knee surgery, came off the bench to score eight points, grab six rebounds and dish out four assists.

“He was tremendous tonight. He’s an unbelievably tough kid," Brownell said. "When he was having the surgery, I was a little distraught because our team needed to put some practice time together to win some games."

For a third straight game, Jerai Grant came off the bench. And for a second straight game, the senior pulled down a double-double. This time he finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Tanner Smith, who hit 3-of-5 3-point attempts, scored 11 points. Devin Booker had 10.

College of Charleston opened the game with an 11-0 run.

After 5:01 ticked off the clock, Clemson finally lit the scoreboard. It started a 7-0 run by the Tigers.

With just under six minutes to go in the first half, Clemson claimed its first lead of the game, which came on the heels of a 10-0 run.

Clemson trailed 29-26 at halftime.

Andrew Goudelock finished with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field.

The Tigers shot 42 percent from the field while the Cougars hit on a 40 percent clip.

"There was a great contingent of Clemson people. They certainly could be heard, which helped us," Brownell said. "We need to feel good about ourselves by winning close games on the road."
