Clemson on deck for visit No. 4
Thomasville County Central High School senior defensive end Ray Drew scheduled the Clemson trip for the weekend of Jan. 21-23, following a visit from Tiger defensive coordinator Kevin Steele.
"We had been talking about it. It was just a matter of when, because my schedule's been so busy," Drew recently told CUTigers.
Clemson was one of four stops Drew made during his spring break earlier this year.
"I liked what I saw then. I've just got to refresh my memory on what Clemson is all about," he said. "I've been to a lot of different places and seen a lot of different things during that time. I've just got to get in and do some more looking around."
Drew does recall a few things from his one and only visit to Tigertown.
"I met the team chaplain, Jeff Davis, a former player there," he said. "Coach [Dabo] Swinney, I see a lot of similarities with coach [Mark] Richt and coach [Gene] Chizik at Auburn. All of them have the same morals, as far as religion, what their program should be built around."
An important part of the Clemson trip was the meeting with defensive coordinator Kevin Steele.
"One thing that stood out to me the most about him, whenever I go to a lot of these places, they tell me how good you are," Drew said. "They say how they want to use you, blah, blah. We're going to try to use you as much as we can.
"With coach Steele, he was straight-up with me. He said, ‘You have ability to play your first year, but this is what we're going to work on. This is what we saw in your film…we're going to do this and do that.' Instead of telling me how good I was, he told me what they were going to do in order to get me better, to get me to the next level."
And after all, that is one of two "ultimate goals" Drew has—a degree and a career in the NFL.
"[Steele] was just real down to earth with me. He let me know that I wasn't promised a starting position, because you can't just be put on the field," he said.
