Townsend became the 24th member of the Tigers' 2011 class when he picked up the Clemson hat during the fourth quarter of the game—the final player to make his declaration at the annual game.

He chose Clemson over LSU and South Carolina.

"I just went with my gut feeling," Townsend told CUTigers. "That's basically all it was. It was my gut feeling and I just had to go with what was best," he said.

CUTigers reported yesterday that Townsend was expected to select Clemson during Saturday's game.

The Scout.com four-star linebacker is rated as the No. 12 outside linebacker in the class of 2011.

When CUTigers caught up with Townsend at the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, he said Clemson defensive coordinator Kevin Steele made a good impression during a recent in-home visit.

As a senior, Townsend finished with 120 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and seven sacks.
