Texas QB checks out Clemson

A former 2011 quarterback, who is now classified in the class of 2012, visited Clemson all the way from Texas.

QB Preston Dewey Profile

Preston Dewey transferred to St. Andrews (Austin) from Westlake (Austin) at the beginning of the 2010 season. According to Southwest Preparatory Conference rules, the 2011 quarterback was granted another year of eligibility, so he'll be able to go through junior class recruiting again.

On Tuesday, Dewey flew into Greenville with his father.

"[We] got there, drove around a little bit, saw the campus," he told CUTigers.com. "We got to see Howard's Rock, which is one of the best traditions in college football. The stadium is huge. It would be a lot of fun to play in.

"The next day, we went in and met with coach [Chad] Morris—got a little tour of the campus. I saw all the academic buildings, saw the fitness pool, took a tour. Then, we went back and I sat in the quarterback meeting. I got sit with the team. Then, we went out and watched practice. I got to talk to the coaches afterwards."

The trip received a solid review.

"I really enjoyed it. I loved the campus there. It's a really pretty campus," Dewey said. "I liked the coaching staff a lot. I got to talk to them. I love that offense. They get a lot of snaps off. I think it would be a lot of fun to play in."

Though his recruitment is fairly early, Dewey knew Morris before he was the offensive coordinator at Clemson.

"I knew him when he was at Lake Travis. I was at Westlake. I used to play against him, and I've seen the offense first-hand," Dewey said.

What stood out about the trip?

"Just talking with the coaches," he said. "They're great guys. I could see myself being around those guys. They're great coaches. I enjoyed getting to talk to them and to get to know them on a personal level."

When asked about his favorites, Dewey responded, Clemson, North Carolina, LSU, Alabama, Arizona State and South Carolina.

That list is in no particular order.

This spring, he'll also visit South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State and LSU.

Dewey's lone offer is from Southern Miss. Dewey threw for nearly 1,500 yards and 13 touchdowns with a 59 percent completion rate last season at St. Andrews, where he plays for Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer.
