Townsend wants to do "the right thing"
Posted Jun 23, 2011
Four-star linebacker Lateek Townsend is spending his last few days in Marlboro County preparing for a solid start both on and off the field at Clemson.
The documented account of Townsend’s recruitment shows plenty of wild twists and turns. The roller coaster experience ended with a very fitting nationally televised announcement for Clemson at the Army All-American Bowl.
Before his January commitment, he rarely turned down an interview. After the pledge, Townsend was quiet and remained focused on becoming fully qualified.
The four-star linebacker is now days away from his arrival to Clemson with the star-studded 2011 signing class.
“I’m just ready for the whole experience. The main thing, I’m going to work hard, try to make sure I get my degree,” Townsend told
“I’m going to work hard in the classroom. That’s one thing I can’t really say that I did in high school. I didn’t really know much. I didn’t know the ins and outs how the school system works, with the GPA. I’m going to make sure I hit the classroom real hard.”
His focus these days is on the people that are closest to him.
“I’m spending time with my family, just trying to humble myself before I go to Clemson. I’ve got to go up there and do the right thing,” Townsend said.
Of course, he recognizes the opportunity for early playing time. With Brandon Maye departing this offseason and a true need for playmakers at linebacker, how could he not?
is a great coach,” Townsend said. “He’s going to put the best players on the field. I’ve just got to go out there and show what I’ve got with the other players.
“I’ve got to compete. As long as I compete well and learn the playbook and the scheme, the things he wants me to do, it just depends on how fast I learn those things.”
As a senior, Townsend had 132 tackles, 19 tackles for loss and four sacks, plus 21 quarterback pressures, two caused fumbles and two recovered fumbles. As a junior, he had 189 tackles and 12 quarterback sacks.
