Clemson's newest quarterback
As a senior at Grayson High School [Loganville, Ga.] Schuessler led the Rams to a perfect 15-0 record and a state championship. He threw for 1,853 yards and 20 touchdowns and also rushed for 297 yards with five scores.
This past February, he signed with Mississippi State. Not long after he arrived to Starkville earlier this summer, he was ready to leave.
"I feel like I made mistake there, so I got my release from there," he told CUTigers in a recent interview. "I prayed about it. The opportunity came up to go play at Clemson with [Robert Nkemdiche], [David Kamara] and [Wayne Gallman].
"Rob and David, I'm real, real close with. We always talked about getting to play with each other in college. When that opportunity re-presented itself, I couldn't turn it down."
In the summer of 2011, Clemson invited Schuessler in for camp. An offer was in the works.
"Coach [Chad] Morris said they had one other QB [Chad Kelly], which I guess is the kid that's there now," Schuessler said. "He committed before they offered me. They have a policy. Once that one person commits, and then they stop recruiting, which is understandable."
Fast-forward to January of 2012. Schuessler said Dabo Swinney offered him a greyshirt opportunity.
"At the time I decided I wanted to go to Mississippi State, where I'd be able to go in the summer," Schuessler said.
As it turned out, that was the wrong choice for him. Schuessler will enroll at Clemson in August.
On Friday, he'll make his first trip to Clemson since last summer.
"I love the campus. I love the facilties. Probably, the most important thing for me is the coaches," Schuessler said. "I love coach Morris and I love coach Swinney. They're Christian me. That's the kind of people I want to be around.
"I was more comfortable around them than I was with the coaches at Mississippi State."
Scout.com rated Schuessler a two-star prospect and ranked him as the No. 111 quarterback in the class of 2012.
