Wiggins assesses freshman campaign
Posted Oct 31, 2013
CLEMSON - It wasn’t just lip service when Hillside High School head coach Antonio King talked to CUTigers about Korrin Wiggins.
“He’ll make it real hard for them to even think about a redshirt this year,” King told
, during a March interview.
Eight games into his Clemson career, Wiggins has logged 194 snaps in seven games. He’s recorded nine tackles, broken up three passes and intercepted another.
Wiggins, who played a career-high 62 snaps against Maryland, offered an evaluation of his play.
“Pretty decent, always room for improvement,” he said. “I just try and work on technique-type things, just make sure that I’m fundamentally sound, and just know what I’m doing out there.”
as a three-star prospect, Wiggins was ranked the No. 52 safety in the class of 2013. All of his snaps this season have been at the nickel and dime positions.
Wiggins will continue to play nickel and dime this season. Whether or not he’ll move to safety or not is yet to be determined, as far as he knows.
“I’m just really focused on now,” Wiggins said. “I’m just trying to just perfect the craft and technique things that coach [
] wants us to do, and just learn for right now.
“I’m trying to keep working and get better. I’m going to play, regardless, keep working and play where they want me to play.”
Primarily a safety and a cornerback at Hillside, playing nickel and dime has been a slight adjustment, particularly at this level.
“I would say the toughest part, probably, would be knowing the speed of the game and the speed of the guys you’re going against are just as fast or a little bit faster than you,” Wiggins said. “You try and work on your technique to offset the quickness of the other guys.”
One of four freshmen defensive backs to play for Clemson this season; only Jayron Kearse has played more snaps .
Wiggins enjoys his role and new position.
“You get to get closer to the action, so to speak. You get to do a little bit more,” he said. “You get to play man, play zone, blitz. Safety, you play more coverage…you get to do a little more versatile-type things at nickel.”
