Staying Close to Home
6-2, 270, 4.9
Union High School
Union, South Carolina
The 2004 recruiting class received a big boost late last week when former Union DT Rashaad Jackson was approved by the NCAA Clearinghouse to enroll at Clemson University this fall.
When Jackson learned that he would be able to stay close to home, instead of spending two years at Southwest Mississippi Junior College, the news hit his household like a breath of fresh air.
"It was a relief," said Jackson. "It was great knowing that I didn't have to go all the way down to Mississippi. To be honest, I was really excited when I got the call. My mother, my grandmoter, and my uncle were excited about it too because now they don't have to go that far to see me play."
Jackson was one of the top defensive linemen in the state last year playing for former head coach Mike Anthony at Union, and it was Anthony that helped Jackson remained focued throughout his senior season.
"He always encouraged me to do the right thing," said Jackson. "I'll never forget that. He kind of told me before that I might be able to get in but he told me not to get excited to about it, and to remain focused on the things that I should be doing."
"Its hard to say how much he's done for me, but I guess you could put that he's been very influential," added Jackson.
The former Union standout will be rooming with former Lamar safety and fellow Shrine Bowler Mike Hamlin this season at Clemson, but don't think he's keeping his focus strictly on the football field.
Jackson wants to prove he belongs.
"I want to major in hotel management," said Jackson. "I've got a lot of work to do when I get there and I know that. I'm really looking forward to just getting started with school and everything that comes with that."
The incoming freshman will report to Clemson on Friday at 6-feet-2 inches tall, and 256 pounds.
Last season, Jackson recorded 130 tackles and 12 sacks for the Yellow Jackets.
