Three weeks ago, he became Clemson's career leader in completions in the Texas A&M game. Then against Virginia Thursday night, the junior became the school's all-time leader in passing yards, passing Woodrow Dantzler, who threw for 6,037 yards.
Whitehurst's record-breaking pass came in the second quarter when he connected with receiver Airese Currie for 12 yards. The completions put him at 6,044 yards in just 23 career starts.
Whitehurst already owned the career record for attempts.
Clemson offensive tackle Barry Richardson became the first true freshman to start on the offensive line since Stacy Long did it against Georgia in 1986.
Long, who was inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame last month, didn't play long against the Bulldogs as he was on the field for just seven snaps. The Tigers, however, still earned the victory.
Since freshman eligibility returned to college football in 1972, only four first-year freshmen offensive linemen have started a game for the Tigers.
Besides Richardson and Long, James Farr started at center in 1980 and Joe Bostic started at offensive tackle in the 1975 season.
Some 90 minutes prior to kickoff, Virginia placekicker Connor Hughes and kickoff man Kurt Smith were warming up on the field with a soccer ball.
The two were lined up about 40 yards apart and were passing it to each other by booting it over the other players that were warming up on the field as well.
Meanwhile, at the complete opposite end of the field, one of Virginia's backup quarterbacks, who happens to right-handed, was tossing a football his left hand, while wearing a camouflage shirt.
TOP 10 OPPONENTS
Clemson has had a tough go of it with its schedule this year.
Not only did the Tigers not have a home game for 35 straight days, but they also had to face consecutive opponents ranked in the top 10 for the first time in 21 years.
Back on Sept. 25, Clemson played at eighth-ranked Florida State and followed that up with Thursday's game at No. 10 Virginia.
The last time the Tigers played consecutive games against opponents ranked in the top 12 came in 1983, when they defeated a 10th-ranked North Carolina team 16-3 and an 11th-ranked Maryland team 52-27 in November.
However, it is the first time Clemson has played consecutive games against top 10 opponents since 1966.
Entering the Virginia game, Clemson coach Tommy Bowden was 2-7 against top 10 teams, with his two wins coming last year after beating Florida State and Tennessee.
Clemson experienced a couple of school firsts with its game on national television Thursday night. It marked the first time that a Tigers game could be seen on High Definition Television, as well as the first time a "sky cam" was used throughout the entire field. A sky cam was used last year when Clemson faced Tennessee in the Peach Bowl, but the cam was stationed solely along the Volunteers sideline. …
Tight end Ben Hall's 56-yard reception on Clemson's opening drive was the longest of his four-year career. … When Tigers placekicker Jad Dean booted a 43-yard field goal toward the end of the first quarter, it marked the first field goal of his career. …
At halftime, the Virginia athletic department honored retired and long-time coach George Welsh, who was just recently inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. During his career, Welsh compiled a 189-132-4 overall record in 24 years, 19 of which were spent at Virginia, where he went 134-86-3 and brought a program out of ruins.
Part of the tribute was a performance by The Temptations, who sang all their top hits.
