Clemson lands one of the top kickers in the southeast in Riverside's Richard Jackson.
"Biggest Rush of My Life"
Riverside High School
Greer, South Carolina
CUTigers.com caught up with the latest Clemson commitment, K Richard Jackson, to get all the details on his verbal commitment and his thoughts on following a family tradition of playing football at Clemson.
Talk a little about how your decision went down last Friday night?
Jackson: It was late Friday night. I was torn between the final two schools (LSU and Clemson). Finally around 10:30, I decided on Clemson. I just went with my heart.
What was the reaction of the coaching staff?
Jackson: I called Coach Blackwell and Coach Bowden to let them know. They were both excited. I guess they are having a good recruiting year so far. They said they were really looking forward to the season and our recruiting class.
Why did you want to go ahead and make your commitment in early July?
Jackson: I knew that nothing was going to change. I knew there wouldn't be one thing I was waiting on to make the decision. I didn't want it hanging over my head. I just decided to make a deadline and make it by then.
How did your family react to your decision?
Jackson: They had been quiet during the process because they wanted me to make my own decision. Once they heard my decision they were very excited. Most of my family went to Clemson. My grandfather, both parents, aunts, uncles and cousins all went to Clemson. I even have one cousin that just graduated from Clemson.
Why did you decide to be a Clemson Tiger?
Jackson: I wanted to be open-minded during the process, but when it came down to it there was nobody ahead of Clemson. I just went with my heart at the end.
What are your plans for the rest of the summer?
Jackson: I have one of two more instructional camps. Then I will be doing weight lifting and training. We start practice on August 1.
What are you looking forward to the most about playing football at Clemson?
Jackson: I'm just looking forward to taking the step to next level. It should be exciting. The first game I get to run down the hill will be the biggest rush of my life.
Any thought about becoming the next Chris Gardocki?
Jackson: Those are some big shoes to fill. As of right now I will come in when both the punter and kicker are seniors. I will come in and compete, but probably redshirt my freshman year. I want to compete for both positions. I have done both my entire high school career.
