Mathis Leads Tigers Past PR-Mayaguez
Posted Dec 19, 2005
The men's basketball team improved to 9-0 on the season Monday with a 101-60 win over PR-Mayaguez.
Four Tigers scored in double figures, including a career-high 15 points from Troy Mathis, to lead Clemson to a 101-60 victory over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez in the first round of the San Juan Shootout Monday morning.
Mathis scored all of his points from behind the arc, connecting on 5-of-6 three pointers.
Shawan Robinson finished with 14 points on 4-of-4 shooting from three point range. Little used guard Matt Morris was also perfect from three-point range, connecting on all three of this attempts for a career high nine points in 13 minutes of action.
With the win, the Tigers improve to 9-0 on the year and move on to play the winner of Holy Cross/UT-Chattanooga game Tuesday at noon.
"It's always good when you play an early game and win," said head coach Oliver Purnell. "It's good to get back out on the court and we obviously got to play a lot of guys.
"It wasn't the sharpest we've been, but we did stay after it, and it's nice to see Troy break out and give us some offensive power that we anticipated."
The Tigers shot 61% from the field, connecting on 37-of-60 shots, including a school record 16 three-pointers.
"We were getting some wide open looks. Anytime you are up 30 points it can be really hard to stay focused. Hopefully we'll have an opportunity to do that a few more times this year and we can master that feat," said Purnell.
Clemson also outrebounded PR-Mayaguez 42 to 27 and had 11 steals and 11 blocked shots, including a career high five from Steve Allen.
