Updates on former Tigers Charlie Whitehurst, Justin Miller, Jamaal Fudge, Chris Gardocki and more!
GARDNER IN GREEN BAY
Former Clemson wide receiver Rod Gardner, now with the Green Bay Packers, made news last week when he was involved in a fight with teammate CB Ahmad Carroll.
Apparently the two got into a scuffle during a two-minute drill simulation near the end of last Monday's practice. Gardner gave Carroll a small shove after running a route, and Carroll responded by trying to kick Gardner. The two ended up rolling around on the ground and had to be separated by teammates.
Gardner is trying to work his way into the regular rotation at wide receiver with the Packers this year. So far this preseason he has caught two passes for 31 yards.
FUDGE SHOWING STAYING POWER
The latest word on Jamaal Fudge is that he's continuing to fight to win one of the final roster spots with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Teams around the league are required to cut their rosters down to 75 by the end of Monday, but word is that Fudge will remain with the team.
All teams must have their roster down to 53 players before the start of the regular season.
WHITEHURST FIGHTING FOR BACKUP ROLE
Former Clemson signal caller Charlie Whitehurst may have lost a step on A.J. Feeley for the back up quarterback position in the Chargers' 31-20 win over Seattle Saturday.
Feeley completed all four of his passes for 54 yards and a touchdown while Whitehurst connected on just 3-of-7 passes for 19 yards and an interception.
San Diego head coach Marty Schottenheimer said last Thursday, "There's very keen competition between those two right now."
In three games, Whitehurst has completed 20-of-38 passes for 166 yards and two interceptions.
MILLER BAITS PLAXICO BURRESS
Former Clemson CB Justin Miller drew two penalties from veteran wide out Plaxico Burress in a preseason game between the Jets and Giants Friday.
Burress first drew a flag for a shot to Miller's face. The second flag came when Burress grabbed Miller's facemask and threw him to the turf.
Miller has alternated on the first team defense with CB David Barrett this preseason, but he'll likely start opposite Andre Dyson this year for New York. He's also being used on kickoff returns (four returns for 140 yards this preseason, including a long of 47).
QUICK HITS
: Kevin Youngblood caught one pass for nine yards in the Falcons' 20-6 win over Tennessee. Youngblood signed a two-year contract with Atlanta in January and figures to at least be on the team's practice squad. ... LB Keith Adams chances of making the Panthers' 53-man roster were enhanced last week when fellow linebacker Na'il Diggs suffered a knee injury. ... Chris Garcocki may have his career extended another year when the Steelers announced last week they have extra salary cap space. Earlier this month there were rumors the team would keep P Mike Barr over Gardocki because he was younger and cheaper. ... Airese Currie returned to practice last week after missing the Bears' preseason opener with a knee injury. Currie has yet to catch a pass this preseason.
