Coleman Suspended for Bowl Game
Duane Coleman

Posted Dec 22, 2006

Clemson defensive back Duane Coleman has been suspended for the December 29th Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl vs. Kentucky, Head Coach Tommy Bowden announced on Friday. Coleman was arrested and charged with simple possession of marijuana on Wednesday.

"After reviewing the facts and speaking with Duane, I have decided to suspend Duane Coleman for the Music City Bowl," said Bowden. "I did not make this decision in haste. Duane has made great progress in his career at Clemson, culminating with his graduation from Clemson on Thursday. He has done a lot for this program and is one of the leaders of this team. He has the respect of his teammates. But, he has to be held accountable for his actions."

Coleman started all 12 regular-season games at cornerback and was an Honorable Mention All-ACC selection. He finished the year with 81 tackles, fourth on the team, had three recovered fumbles and one interception. He was named ACC Defensive Back-of-the-Week in Clemson's win at No. 9 Florida State when he totaled nine tackles.

Coleman is the only player in Clemson history to start a bowl game on offense and on defense, and is the only player in Clemson history with at least 50 receptions and 100 tackles. He was Clemson's leading rusher as a freshman in 2003.

"I want to apologize to my teammates, coaches, and fans," Coleman said. "I made a mistake and I must accept the consequences for my actions. I met with coach Bowden this morning and he explained his decision, which I accept.

"I am not going to let one night ruin my time at Clemson. I grew as a person here the last five years. Clemson University did a lot for me and I appreciate it very much. I am also proud of the contributions I made to this football program.

"Few people thought I would graduate when I first came here. At times, I am not even sure I thought I could do it. But, I accomplished that yesterday and I am proud to be a Clemson graduate."
