Clemson pitching and associate head coach Kevin O’Sullivan, who is also one of the top recruiters in the nation, has accepted the job as Florida’s new baseball coach, he confirmed to solely to CUTigers.com Wednesday evening.
An official announcement is expected to be made Thursday at a press conference in Gainesville.
O’Sullivan was also considered a candidate at Tennessee, but his interview in Gainesville Wednesday went so well that school officials offered him the job.
O’Sullivan, 38, is known throughout the country as one of the more relentless and tireless recruiters in the nation, as evident by the continuous high ranking signing classes the Tigers have on an annual basis.
During his tenure at Clemson, which began in 1999, the Tigers have been known for having some of the best pitching staffs in the ACC and in the Southeast. The last two seasons are proof as such.
This year alone, the Tigers had three pitchers drafted in the top few rounds. He also has had 28 of his former Clemson pitchers sign professional contracts.
While a member of the Clemson staff, the Tigers made three trips to the College World Series.
O’Sullivan’s hiring comes exactly one week following the dismal of former Gators coach Pat McMahon. He will be the 21st head coach in Florida history. Conversely, the Tigers have had only two head coaches since 1958.
Clemson coach Jack Leggett now has to begin the search of finding O’Sullivan’s replacement, which will be very huge shoes to fill.
