CLEMSON – Following every game, each phase of the Clemson football team will be given a letter grade…
NOTEBOOK: Harper Outstanding
By going 20-of-22 passing, Harper set the single-game record of highest completion percentage (91) with a minimum of 20 attempts. He set another record by throwing four touchdown passes in one quarter and he also completed 15 straight passes for another single-game record.
He only stands three touchdown passes away from breaking the single-season mark of 21 and needs just three completions to start the game against Maryland to break the all-time school mark of consecutive completions of 17.
"The biggest record I'm concerned with is wins and losses," the redshirt junior said. "I don't pay a whole lot of attention to it because it's not going to get me a win next week. After the season's over, I'll sit back and reflect, but now, I've got Maryland to get ready for."
KORN UPDATE: Prior to the game in warm up drills, Korn looked good throwing passes of all sorts lengths and varieties. Even so, third-string quarterback Tribble Reese was sent into the game in the third quarter instead of Korn.
Earlier in the week, Bowden would neither confirm nor deny that he was going to try and get a medical hardship for his prized freshman.
"Some guys can tolerate pain and some guys can't," Bowden said. "Charlie (Whitehurst), a couple of years ago, got shot up every game. Some guys, you shoot them up and play. We don't require that of anybody. Some of them require it of themselves."
It is known for a fact that Korn hurt his shoulder against Furman in the third week of the season, but it wasn't serious enough to prevent him from throwing in practice.
Following the game, Bowden wouldn't elaborate on who would play should Harper go down with a serious injury.
"I'm sure you could create a hypothetical situation somewhere down the line," Bowden said. "I haven't created any in my mind right now. … Right now, I'm trying to go with Tribble and I'll address that issue if (Harper getting hurt) came up."
Korn appears to be handling it about as well as he can considering the circumstances.
"I probably could have (played)," he said. "But I don't know how it would feel after contact and the deep ball still bothers it a little bit, so I don't know. …
"The decision (to sit out the year) hasn't been made yet, so you can look at it how you want. It's really not up to me. I'm just going to do what the coaches want me to do."
QUICK HITS: The only two starting seniors on defense, Tramaine Billie and Nick Watkins, both outside linebackers, were held out for the first quarter as punishment for missing study hall. … Tailback James Davis has 34 career touchdowns, which is good enough for second-best all-time in Clemson football history. Travis Zachery is the leader with 50. …
Davis said that the moves of Thomas Austin from right guard to center and the insertion of Brandon Pilgrim to right guard have given the Tigers a better offensive line. He said that single move could be the biggest thing to happen to the team this year. …
There were no substantial injuries to report.
