OL R.J. Mattes Profile

Clemson recruiting coordinator/tight ends coach Billy Napier traveled to Charlotte Friday night to watch one of the top offensive linemen in the nation in R.J. Mattes.

"He told me he was really impressed with how big I am getting," Mattes said of the visit. "I am up to 285 now. He said he was impressed that I played every snap on offense and defense. I play defensive end or defensive tackle depending on the scheme."

Mattes also said his senior campaign has not gone as well as he would like.

"It has been a rough season. We lost Friday. Most of the people on our team don't seem to care. All I can do it play my best. That is what I've been doing," said Mattes.

This weekend the North Carolina standout plans to watch two of his favorite schools.

"I am going to see Virginia play against North Carolina State. I am going with my dad and my grandpa," said Mattes.

A return trip to Clemson will likely occur in November.

"I am coming back down to Clemson. I think I will come down for the Wake Forest game," said Mattes.

When asked if he has a leader, Mattes responded, "They are still all equal. I can't judge them until after I take my official visits."

The talented athlete will move quickly into another sport when his senior football season is complete.

"We have two games left. Once I am done with football I will be playing basketball. I will also be working out hard," said Mattes.
