Spence Visiting Indiana QB Tuesday

Clemson offensive coordinator Rob Spence will spend Tuesday in Carmel, Ind. to check on one of the nation’s top quarterbacks.

The practice fields at Carmel High (Ind.) were filled with coaches Monday night to watch top quarterback prospect Morgan Newton workout with some of his teammates.

“Coach Jay Paterno was here from Penn State,” he told CUTigers.com Monday evening. “Coach Phillips from Kentucky was here, coach Mullen from Florida, coach Johnson from Iowa and coach Mallery from Illinois.”

What did the coaches get to see Monday night?

“They stood around and watched me throw. I did some throwing with our receivers and running backs. It wasn’t really any pressure. I tried not to mess up too bad. It was fun. It was good for the other guys on the team to get some exposure,” said Newton.

Clemson offensive coordinator Rob Spence will visit Carmel High on Tuesday.

“Coach Spence is coming up tomorrow. He is the only one coming tomorrow I think,” said Newton.

Earlier this month the top quarterback took a visit tour during spring break, including a stop in Tigertown. When will he hit the road for more visits?

“My guess is it will probably be June. We don’t have anything set right now. The family is still recuperating from the other trip,” replied Newton.

The Tigers may be the only team to visit later this week.

“Clemson is all that I know of. My dad may know of more. We will see,” said Newton.

Since it is only April the prize recruit will only throw one night a week for any coaches wanting to see the gunslinger.

“I don’t think we will throw tomorrow. We are just going to do it once a week. We will do it again next Monday at six for any coaches that are here,” said Newton.

Any potential verbal commitment timing is not clear for Morgan at the present time.

“It will probably be later this year. I am not sure yet. We will have to see,” said Newton.

Newton, who is considered one of the top dual threat quarterbacks in the nation for the class of 2008, completed 124-of-213 passes for 1,900 yards and 25 touchdowns passing last season. He also had 132 rushing attempts for 750 yards and 11 touchdowns.
