MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Scout.com's No. 21 middle linebacker prospect in the country announced a verbal commitment to Clemson University today in a press conference at Baldwin High School.

LB Corico Hawkins Profile

Hawkins committed to Clemson over his other two top schools of Florida and Auburn. He was also offered a scholarship by South Carolina.

"I'm going to Clemson," he told CUTigers.com. "The facilities, location, and playing time were all things I was thinking about. Playing time was a major factor because the depth is not that deep. It'd be a great place for me to go in and play. I can display my skills a freshman or sophomore."

As a junior, the three-star linebacker recorded 109 tackles, 16 for a loss, three caused fumbles and one fumble recovery.

Hawkins is Clemson's 12th public verbal commitment for the class of 2009, and the third linebacker (Quandon Christian & Eric Fields) as well.

"Coach Bowden really treated Corico like family," Baldwin high school head coach Jesse Hicks said. "It was always a good fit for him. They made him feel like Clemson was where he needed to be."

Hawkins' cousin, Leroy Hill, also played football at Clemson before being drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft.

"The coaching staff are exceptionally great guys," Hawkins said. "My recruiting coordinator, Chris Rumph, told me that I would love Clemson. In the end he was telling me the truth. My linebackers coach, David Blackwell, has put guys in the NFL like Leroy Hill and Anthony Waters."

Somewhat surprisingly, Hawkins has never even attended a Clemson home game before.

"I haven't really gotten a chance to experience the fans yet," he said. "I will be attending the first home game [next month]. I've heard that they have the best fans in college football, ever."

Hawkins also said his commitment is firm and that he plans to major in one of three options.

"Right now I plan to major in marketing, business administration, or exercise scienece. That's the three for right now," he said. "As I mature those might change."
