Four more Tigers drafted

Clemson pitchers Chris Dwyer, Ryan Hinson, Graham Stoneburner, and Trey Delk were all selected on day-two of the 2009 Major League Draft on Wednesday.

The first 30 rounds of the draft were held on Tuesday and Wednesday, while the last 20 rounds will be held on Thursday. The four pitchers join third-round pick Ben Paulsen as the five Tigers selected in the first 30 rounds of the 2009 draft.

Dwyer was chosen in the fourth round (#122 overall pick) by the Kansas City Royals. Although the lefthander was only a freshman in 2009, he was draft-eligible due to being 21 years-old. In 2009, he was 5-6 with a 4.92 ERA in 86.0 innings pitched over 17 starts. He allowed 76 hits (.236 opponents' batting average) and 33 walks with 95 strikeouts. He led the pitching staff in starts, complete games (1), and strikeouts, as he became the first Tiger freshman to lead the team in strikeouts since 1997. The Swampscott, MA native, who was drafted in the 36th round by the New York Yankees in 2008, also became the first first-year freshman from a four-year college selected in the Major League Draft since 1965.

Hinson was selected in the 10th round (#294 overall pick) by the San Diego Padres. The senior lefthander had a 2-1 record and 3.76 ERA in 38.1 innings pitched over a team-high 28 appearances (two starts) in 2009. He yielded 33 hits (.228 opponents' batting average) and 18 walks with 47 strikeouts. In his four-year career at Clemson, he had a 15-8 record, 3.69 ERA, and two saves in 219.1 innings pitched over 85 appearances (27 starts). The 85 appearances are fifth-most in Clemson history. The Rock Hill, SC native, who was drafted in the 31st round by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2008 and in the 28th round by the Boston Red Sox in 2005, also allowed 213 hits (.255 opponents' batting average) and 97 walks with 200 strikeouts in his career.

Stoneburner was drafted in the 14th round (#435 overall pick) by the New York Yankees. The sophomore righthander, who red-shirted in 2007, had a 7-4 record, 3.52 ERA, and one save in 64.0 innings pitched over 20 appearances (seven starts) in 2009. The Richmond, VA native gave up 70 hits (.283 opponents' batting average), 19 walks, and only two home runs with 71 strikeouts. He tied for the team-lead in wins and had an outstanding 3.74-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In his two active seasons at Clemson, he is 13-9 with a 4.59 ERA in 135.1 innings pitched over 36 appearances (21 starts).

Delk was chosen in the 29th round (#883 overall pick) by the Chicago White Sox. The senior righthander had a 4-1 record and 3.44 ERA in 49.2 innings pitched over 11 starts in 2009. The Elgin, SC native also allowed 53 hits (.272 opponents' batting average) and 22 walks with 41 strikeouts. In his two seasons at Clemson, he was 6-2 with a 3.70 ERA in 92.1 innings pitched over 25 appearances (16 starts).
