Oliver Purnell

Clemson head basketball coach Oliver Purnell has agreed in principle to a two-year contract extension that will keep him in Tigertown through 2016.

Clemson athletic spokesman Tim Bourret said Tuesday the school and Purnell have not signed the deal, but have a framework in place. Bourret says the extension will boost Purnell's salary to about $1.35 million.

A year ago, Purnell earned a two-year extension through 2014 that guaranteed him $1 million a year.

Purnell has led the Tigers to consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament after a 10-year absence.

He also led Clemson to the finals of the NIT three years ago and has brought in two nationally ranked recruiting classes in the past three years.
