College coaches have been very busy this week, issuing out official scholarship offers to a number…
Tigers out in front after offer, visit
He spent all day at school, thinking he'd get the news that Clemson's offer had been extended. The day came and went and still there was nothing. After a peak into the mailbox, he saw an envelope from Clemson.
There it was—his first offer.
"It knew it was here as soon as I got (the mail)," he said. "I was happy. So was my father. I think he was happier than I was. That's one of the schools he is probably going to want me to go to."
The offer has Clemson at the of Smith's list. Georgia is in a close second. Though there's a long way until Signing Day 2011, he recently told CUTigers that his decision will probably come down between the two.
On Saturday, Smith was in town to see Clemson play Middle Tennessee. Last year, he visited as a recruit for The Citadel game. His first Clemson game was the year before against Virginia Tech.
Impressed with the newly finished West End Zone, Smith came away impressed by the weekend.
"The coaches were good and everybody seemed to recognize who I was," he said.
The quarterback at Woodland, the position would be his first choice if he could decide. As freshman, he threw for 2,500 yards and 25 touchdowns and also ran for over 700 yards and 7 additional scores. During his sophomore year, he totaled 3,400 yards of offense and 36 touchdowns.
Smith would get looks at quarterback but coaches have told him that he could move to another position like receiver or defensive back.
On Saturday, he spoke with Coach Dabo Swinney and assistants Dan Brooks and Billy Napier. Smith talked to 2010 commit Kalon Davis and 2011 commit DeShaun Williams as well.
Smith said he is 6-0, 192 pounds.
Clemson has already secured commitments from three prospects for the class of 2011. S Brandon Ellerbe committed just last week while four-star RB Marlin Lane and DT committed to the coaching staff in June.
