Spiller gets the shaft

Clemson running back C.J. Spiller was not selected as one of five finalists for the Heisman Trophy.

After rushing for 233 yards and scoring four touchdowns in the ACC Championship game, it was thought Clemson running back C.J. Spiller had positioned himself nicely to be named one of five finalists for the Heisman Trophy.

Apparently most of the voters for college football's biggest award didn't feel that way.

Spiller was left out of the top five, which was announced shortly after 6 PM Monday.

Florida QB Tim Tebow, Texas QB Colt McCoy, Alabama RB Mark Ingram, Stanford RB Toby Gerhart and Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh were all named in announcement on ESPN.

"I certainly wanted to make it to New York for the Heisman presentation," Spiller said in a released statement. "It would have been great for this football program and Clemson University in general. But, I have done the best I could in every game. I have no regrets.

"I want to especially thank the Clemson fans for their support. I know they came out in great numbers in the fan voting poll (Spiller finished second in that poll) and have been very supportive of me my entire career."

Spiller rushed 201 times for 1,145 yards and 11 touchdowns this season.

He also had 33 catches for 445 yards and four more scores in addition to 704 kickoff return yards and 210 punt return yards. In all, he accounted for 20 total touchdowns.

And with the bowl game against Kentucky still left to play, he's not done yet.

"We have one game left," he said. "We have not won a bowl game since I have been at Clemson. The seniors want to go out with a win."
