Just weeks after he committed, Lowndes High School defensive back Geraldo Orta decided to go back on…
Tigers land commitment No. 11
Orta, who chose Clemson over offers from Tennessee, South Carolina and Maryland was the second prospect to commit to Clemson Saturday. Dorman wide receiver Adam Humprhies also pledged to play for the orange and white as well.
The 2011 Lowndes High School (Valdosta) cornerback told CUTigers why he chose the Tigers shortly after the decision was made.
"Just the environment I was just around everybody, it just felt like the place I wanted to be," he said.
The cornerback always liked Clemson, but he had to see it for himself, which he did Saturday, before making any kind of a decision.
"I just wasn't sure. I wanted to visit the campus so I did that today…I wanted to get that experience," he said.
Offensive tackles/tight ends coach Danny Pearman and defensive backs coach Charlie Harbison combined on the recruiting efforts.
Seeing those two along with the rest of the coaching staff, plus the Clemson campus helped seal the deal
"It made me happy, really. I had never seen Clemson before, it was a new experience for me," Orta said.
Pearman and Harbison were through Valdosta in May during the spring evaluation period, following up on the offer Clemson made nearly two months ago.
Orta said he plans to be back in Clemson by the end of June. Trips to Georgia, Mississippi State and South Florida were scheduled for later on this month.
"Ever since I made this decision, I'm probably not going to do that," Orta said.
As a junior, he had 76 tackles, four tackles for loss and six interceptions as a safety at Lowndes.
Orta is the 11th verbal commitment for Clemson in the 2011 recruiting class.
