Clemson tight ends/offensive tackles coach Danny Pearman was in Charlotte last week to watch 2011…
Clemson class filling up
Colton Walls picked up the offer after a one-day appearance at the Dabo Swinney Camp earlier this spring.
And it was that day's session that sold him on the Tigers.
"Being around the coaches, I really liked the coaches and the coaching style, the philosophy they have down there at Clemson," he recently told CUTigers.
Head coach Dabo Swinney, defensive coordinator Kevin Steele and recruiter Danny Pearman helped make the sell.
"I had fun down there, working with coach Steele, talking to coach Swinney and coach Pearman. It was pretty fun down there," Walls said.
It was the third trip to Clemson. He also visited Tigertown for the spring game and junior day earlier this year.
Walls selected Clemson over Memphis and Duke, his other two offers to date. He's also received lots of interest from North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss and Virginia.
During his junior season, at middle linebacker, Walls registered 116 tackles, seven sacks, blocked two punts and had an interception.
The son of former NFL tight end Wesley Walls, who spent time with the Carolina Panthers, the younger Walls has enjoyed the advantage of growing up with someone who's done it all before.
"He's been through all of this before. He's always helped me keep my head, told me what to say in certain situations. Most important is he's helped me work out—make me better, faster," he said.
The call with the news was placed to Swinney, who was happy to receive the word.
"Coach Swinney said he was glad to accept my commitment. He was fired up and told me I was their first linebacker commitment. They're signing a full class of linebackers this year," Walls said. "He hopes I'm the first of many."
Walls commmitment gives the Tigers 16 verbal commitments for the 2011 recruiting class.
He checked officially at 6-2.5, 222 pounds earlier this summer at the Under-Armour camp in Charlotte. He also was timed at 4.88 seconds in the 40-yard dash.
